Firstly, hello from Hangzhou! We are a very new school that opened its doors to over 400 students, Kinder thru to Grade 9, at the commencement of the 2018-19 academic year. This was a tremendous achievement, as we recruited well past our target number, but amply demonstrates the interest that parents have in the BASIS Curriculum network within this city. Already we have a large waiting list for the new academic year, and will be judiciously assessing children from October.
At the time of writing, BASIS International School Hangzhou is dealing with the issues that all new international schools in China are faced with. The over-arching issue: ensuring students’ English is speedily garnered. Inevitably, this can be professionally challenging since our students quite probably do not go home to neither an English-speaking nor print environment. As such, we balance additional English acquisition with the simultaneous provision of a rigorous academic curriculum.
Teaching in our school is a rewarding experience, best suited to those who relish some challenge and who can be flexible in their approach. In return, they would find themselves in a friendly and supportive community atmosphere–surrounded by a staff that enjoys its time together.
As a city, Hangzhou is in the ascendancy. It is an ancient and verdant place, interlaced with a huge network of old canals. Hangzhou has recently achieved status as a top-tier city within China, as it is actively embracing the concept of internationalism, whilst building incredibly modern and amenable suburbs. The school finds itself in one of the latter, but is still only a 10-minute cab ride to the city center.
BASIS International School Hangzhou seeks staff who are contemplating finding a school in which they really want to stay–and make a difference. That being said, we also wish to provide opportunities that will not only embolden resumes, but ready those teachers who wish to move into administration opportunities either within Hangzhou or our sister BASIS International Schools within China.
