About Our School

BASIS International School Nanjing rendering

Architectural rendering of BASIS International School Nanjing

Upon opening in September 2019, BASIS International School Nanjing will be a PreK through grade 9 day school, and a five day boarding school for 350 students; ultimately the campus will grow to PreK – 12 and a maximum of 1,200 students. Our school will operate from a purpose-built campus in Xianlin University Town, Nanjing. In addition to spacious and well-equipped classrooms, it will include an indoor swimming pool, staff accommodations, black box theatre, cafeteria, gymnasium, library, student dormitories, and extensive outdoor sports facilities including a running track, football field, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and basketball courts.

We are looking for talented educators who enjoy the important work of teaching children. We seek energetic people who go out of their way to go the extra mile for and with their students, who have an in-depth knowledge of and passion for the subject they teach, and who are willing to contribute to our school’s extracurricular activities and overall community. We are especially interested in professionals who have previous experience working with English language learners, working in the private sector, and/or working in boarding schools, although these are not prerequisites. Essentially, we are keen to appoint educators who have a positive and solution-focused attitude and will thrive on the challenges and rewards of working in a new school–though one that is part of a successful and established network.

Together, we will build a vibrant school culture that engages students and helps them learn to love learning. Achievements (whether big or small) will be both appreciated and celebrated. In addition, joy and laughter will be present in the daily life of our campus. We envision a collegial and collaborative workplace that promotes strong camaraderie among all staff, while building meaningful relationships on trust and understanding. We will construct a shared sense of belonging and purpose, ultimately creating the school of choice in Nanjing. The successful educators at our school will be reflective practitioners who are always looking for ways to improve and who are consistently willing to engage in quality conversations with colleagues about pedagogy.

Nanjing: Culture, History, and Seasons

Nanjing is an extremely attractive and culturally rich city. The capital of Jiangsu province, it is picturesquely set along the southern bank of the Yangzi River, close to the magnificent Purple Mountain. This city of scenic lakes, forested parks, and tree-lined boulevards is still enclosed within its grand city wall. Nanjing, which means “Southern Capitol,” served as China’s capitol under various dynasties, kingdoms, and republican governments and today boasts many important historical sites, including the impressive Zhonghua Gate, the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, and Linggu Pagoda. It has an abundance of restaurants, museums, temples, tea houses, art galleries, theaters, shopping malls, and chic cafes and bars. Furthermore, Nanjing is a very safe city of foreigners to live and is incredibly affordable as well.

Nanjing’s four seasons are clearly distinguishable. Spring presents beautiful cherry and plum blossoms, summer hosts dragon boat races at Mochou Lake Park, fall is the perfect time to enjoy the flaming-red maple trees and shimmering golden gingko leaves near a secluded Buddhist monastery on Qixia Mountain, and, in the winter, visits to Tangshan for dips into bubbling hot springs are common.

One of the most attractive reasons for teaching a BASIS International School Nanjing is the opportunity to explore China. Nanjing is connected to all major domestic cities–meaning you can take high-speed bullet trains to Beijing (3-4 hours), Shanghai (1-2 hours), and Suzhou (2-3 hours). In addition, Nanjing Lukou International Airport has 135 domestic air routes and about 25 international air routes to far-flung places like Bali, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand.

We look forward to a new year in a new school and hope you are as excited as we are about the opening of BASIS International School Nanjing.

Right now I am working on a MA project on the recruitment principles for English teachers, would you like to spare several minutes to talk me through this issue? It won’t take you much time (only 4 questions). I would be very appreciate it if you would like to participation into this study because your voice contributes to this study’s credibility.
