When I first accepted the opportunity to join BASIS International School Hangzhou, I understood that I was stepping into a new chapter filled with learning, growth, and unknowns. What I didn’t anticipate was how quickly this experience would begin to shape me both professionally and personally. Over these past several months, BASIS International School Hangzhou has become so much more than just a workplace; it has become a supportive community, a source of inspiration, and a space where I am continually challenged to evolve.

Professionally, working at BASIS International School Hangzhou has been deeply rewarding. The expectations are high, and the environment is driven by excellence, but what truly stands out is the support and collaboration that accompany those expectations. I’ve been encouraged not only to teach, but to think creatively, facilitate meaningful inquiry, and build classrooms that inspire curiosity and confidence. The balance between structure and flexibility has allowed me to grow in my practice, while the trust given to teachers has empowered me to lean into innovation and authenticity.

The students are, without question, one of the greatest highlights of my experience so far. They are curious, witty, thoughtful, and incredibly resilient. Watching them take ownership of their learning and witnessing their growth, academically and personally, has reminded me daily why I chose education. Their energy and openness bring life to each day, and their perspectives continually challenge me to be more reflective and intentional in my approach.

Equally impactful has been the staff community. Moving across the world can feel daunting, but being surrounded by colleagues who are kind, collaborative, and deeply committed to their work makes a significant difference. There is a sense of unity here: a feeling that we are not navigating this experience alone, but alongside people who genuinely understand and support one another. Whether through shared professional conversations, laughter, or encouragement on challenging days, this community has become a grounding force.

Living in Hangzhou has also been an enriching part of this journey. The city itself is beautifully layered, peaceful landscapes like West Lake coexist with the vibrancy of modern city life. Each day brings opportunities to explore, to learn, and to appreciate a culture that is both welcoming and deeply rooted in tradition. Of course, adapting to a new environment naturally brings challenges, but those moments have strengthened my independence, patience, and openness to growth.

There have been moments of homesickness, adjustment, and reflection, but those experiences have only deepened my appreciation for how transformative this opportunity truly is. Hangzhou has slowly shifted from a place I moved to, into a place I am beginning to genuinely call home.

Looking back on these first months, I am grateful. Grateful for students who inspire me, colleagues who support me, and a city that continues to teach me something new every day. I look forward to continuing my journey here, growing alongside my students, and further building a meaningful life and career at BASIS International School Hangzhou.
