Susheel Singhal, founding faculty, and his family and thanksgiving celebration

Embarking on a journey that began in the vibrant city of New Delhi, India, I took a leap of faith and moved to California as a founding faculty member at the first BASIS Independent School within the network. It was my first time venturing outside India, and the excitement of contributing to a pioneering educational endeavor was both exhilarating and transformative. In California, I developed the Engineering and Technology curriculum spanning from Primary School to High School, and my physics classes achieved some of the highest pre-comps and comps scores across network schools in the U.S.

After a fulfilling stint in California, life presented a new adventure: moving to Shenzhen, China, to become a founding faculty member at the first BASIS Curriculum School outside the U.S. What was meant to be a two-year experience has blossomed into nearly a decade—I will be marking ten years in June 2025. Throughout these years, I’ve evolved from a passionate physics teacher to the Vice Head of High School. Along the way, I embraced roles such as Physics Chair and Science Chair, continuously seeking ways to enrich student learning and support fellow educators. This journey has been more than a career path; it’s been a transformative experience that has empowered me to become a more confident educator and leader.

What was it like to be part of founding faculty teams?

Being part of two founding teams has been an extraordinary experience filled with innovation, collaboration, and a sense of pioneering spirit. In California, we set the foundation for what would become a beacon of educational excellence. Crafting curricula from the ground up allowed us to tailor education in a way that truly met the needs and interests of our students.

Transitioning to Shenzhen amplified that excitement. We weren’t just starting a new school; we were introducing the BASIS ethos to an international audience. The challenges were unique—bridging cultural gaps, adapting to a new environment, and building trust within a diverse community. However, the shared vision among the founding team created a strong camaraderie. Every obstacle became an opportunity to innovate, and every success was a collective triumph. It was exhilarating to witness the immediate impact on students and to know that we were contributing to something lasting and significant.

How has BASIS International School Shenzhen evolved from those early days?

The evolution of the school has been nothing short of remarkable. Today, the school is a well-established institution with advanced facilities, a comprehensive curriculum, and a thriving student body. One significant shift has been the enhancement of our academic programs. We’ve expanded our Advanced Placement offerings and introduced specialized courses like capstone and post-AP courses that cater to the diverse interests of our students. Furthermore, the school’s commitment to professional development has grown. There are now more opportunities for teachers to engage in workshops, training sessions, and collaborative projects. This focus on continuous learning has enriched the educational environment for both teachers and students.

What motivated you to take on a manager/leadership role?

The motivation to step into a leadership role stemmed from a desire to amplify my impact beyond the confines of my classroom. Witnessing my students achieve some of the highest AP Physics results in the network was incredibly fulfilling, but I realized that by supporting other teachers, I could contribute to even greater student success across the school.

I was also inspired by the mentors and leaders around me who demonstrated the profound effect that thoughtful leadership can have on a school’s culture and success. The trust placed in me to facilitate Round Table meetings and lead significant projects like the Middle School Science Review Committee fueled my ambition. I wanted to share my experiences, support my colleagues’ professional growth, and help shape the strategic direction of our academic programs.

How has your role as a founding faculty member influenced your leadership style or approach to mentoring others within your school or the network?

Being a founding faculty member has profoundly shaped my leadership style. Having been part of the school’s journey from its inception, I understand the challenges and triumphs that come with building something from the ground up. This experience has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and patience when mentoring others.

My approach is collaborative and supportive—I believe in empowering teachers to explore innovative teaching methods while providing them with the guidance and resources they need. I encourage open dialogue and create spaces where teachers feel comfortable sharing ideas and concerns. Recognizing that every teacher contributes uniquely to our community, I strive to foster an environment where their strengths are highlighted and continuous growth is encouraged.

What training and support does BASIS International Schools provide to help managers/leaders succeed when transitioning to a new role?

BASIS International Schools is committed to the professional growth of its educators, offering a wealth of training and support for those transitioning into leadership roles. Personally, I benefited from numerous Professional Learning and Development (PLD) sessions within the school, which were instrumental in honing my leadership skills. The school also facilitated attendance at various College Board workshops, enhancing my understanding of AP courses and enabling me to support my students and fellow teachers better.

The establishment of the Chief Executive Head of Schools (CEHOS) office provided network-level oversight and brought about structured support systems, fostering coordination across all BASIS International & Bilingual schools. Initiatives like Round Table meetings have improved communication among teachers across all campuses, enhancing the overall quality of education.

The Institute for Management Training (IMAT) provides targeted service leadership development. Under the mentorship of experienced leaders like BASIS Global CEO Dr. Mark Reford, I received tailored guidance that prepared me for the complexities of managerial roles. These resources, combined with collaborative initiatives such as the Round Table meetings, IMAT sessions, and many more, ensure that leaders are well-equipped to succeed and contribute effectively when transitioning to new roles or campuses.

How has your professional development been shaped by the opportunities offered at BASIS International Schools? How have these opportunities evolved over the last 10 years?

The opportunities at BASIS International Schools have significantly enriched my professional development. Initially, the focus was on enhancing my subject expertise and classroom practices through PLD sessions and external College Board AP workshops. These experiences were crucial in achieving outstanding results with my students and setting high academic standards.

Over the last decade, the scope of professional development has expanded to include leadership training (IMAT) and cross-campus collaboration. The opportunities have evolved to address the growing needs of the network, emphasizing not just individual growth but also collective excellence. Programs like the IMAT training have provided platforms to develop strategic leadership skills, project management abilities, and a deeper understanding of educational administration.

Moreover, I’ve had the chance to contribute to significant projects, such as authoring the Science Guidebook for network teachers and leading curriculum development committees. These experiences have enhanced my professional skills and allowed me to have a broader impact on the education system within BASIS International Schools.

Tell us about a mentor who played a part in your growth at BASIS.

Dr. Mark Reford has been a pivotal mentor in my professional journey at BASIS International Schools. His guidance during management training was transformative. Dr. Reford approached mentorship with a balance of challenge and support, encouraging me to think critically about leadership and educational strategies.

His insights into effective communication, strategic planning, and team management were invaluable as I took on more significant responsibilities. Dr. Reford believed in my potential, often entrusting me with complex projects that pushed me out of my comfort zone. His mentorship extended beyond professional advice; he modeled leadership with integrity and vision, qualities I strive to embody in my approach.

My eldest son, Rhythm, joined BASIS International School Shenzhen in Grade 3. He is graduating this year and received an unconditional early decision offer from HKU Business School. My younger son, Vihaan, was just 6 months old when he came to China; today, he is in Grade 4 and loves the school. He is very desperate to graduate from BASIS International Schools. Behind every milestone and achievement, my wife, Shweta, has been the backbone of our family. With immense love, affection, strength, and dedication, she has cared for me and our children, ensuring that we thrive both personally and professionally. I think I have said enough about my 12-year journey with BASIS. I wish to continue serving BASIS International Schools for many more years to come.
