After spending many years teaching in and leading top-tier schools in the United States, England, Japan, and Costa Rica, I am privileged to lead the flagship campus of the BASIS International & Bilingual Schools China network: BASIS International School Shenzhen (BISZ). This diverse experience of countries and cultures has given me a global perspective on education and has greatly informed and refined the way I lead a school community.
A Standard for Excellence
In every school community I have led, my focus is steadfastly on servant leadership; doing everything possible for students and faculty to attain excellence and achieve beyond their perceived limits. I model this not only in the way I observe and coach teachers, but also through my outside interests in sport—and I have finished numerous triathlons and six marathons to date. Academic excellence is our focus, but our goal is to develop well-rounded learners with global perspectives, as is evidenced by BISZ’s robust variety of student-led clubs, extracurricular activities, and competitive sports.
BASIS International School Shenzhen is the leader and standard-bearer for excellence among the BASIS International & Bilingual Schools China network. Founded in 2015, BISZ’s program is accelerated and rigorous, and our graduates are accepted to numerous Top 30 universities and colleges in the US and the UK. Configured into four divisions—Early Childhood, Primary School, Middle School, High School—our teaching community is full of educators who are experts in their subject areas and child development levels. They bring out the best in their students through a focus on deep subject knowledge, combined with the individualized support students need to achieve their full potential.
Teacher Support
The same high level of support our students receive extends to our teachers as well. Our teachers are supported by Department Chairs and Heads of Divisions, who work with them to excel and refine their craft. The teaching environment is professional and collegial, with regular collaboration within grade levels and across departments. This support is further enhanced by a Course Advisor, a teacher in one of the schools in our network, who helps to coordinate unit plans, lessons, and assessments and serves as another point of support for our teachers.
