My name is Margaret Lehmann, and this is my second year at BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Chengdu. I have worked in education in Asia for over 15 years, serving in various roles, from English Teacher to Director of International Programs. I joined BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Chengdu in 2023 as an ELL Support Coordinator, working with Middle and High School students, and stepped into my current role as Head of Primary School for the 2024–2025 academic year.

A Personal Vision for Leadership

My personal vision is to be at my best—not only to make a positive impact but to empower the capabilities of others through education. This vision has been the driving force behind my motivation to step into leadership at BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Chengdu. While pursuing my Education Specialist graduate studies, I analyzed different aspects of leadership on our campus through the lens of an ELL Coordinator. Being asked to step into this new role so quickly was an honor, and I am eager to contribute to our school’s continued growth.

Professional Development and Support

The BASIS International & Bilingual Schools network has provided valuable training through the Summer Institute and the Institute for Management Training (IMAT) sessions. In addition, within the context of BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Chengdu, our Head of School, Mr. Mark Sylte, our Head of Middle School, and our Head of ECE, Mrs. Jessica Loots, have been instrumental in answering my questions and serving as collaborative sounding boards across divisions. These individuals, along with the formal network training, continue to shape my professional development.Margaret & Jessica with mentorship quote

Learning from the School Community

That said, one of the most significant influences on my growth in this role comes from the teachers I serve. The better I understand who they are, the better I can support them in achieving success. The same applies to learning about our campus’ Operations Team, led by our Vice General Manager, Ms. Freda, and our Vice Head of Operations, Ms. Vanessa, whose work is vital to everything we do across divisions. As we celebrate our unique strengths and collaborate more closely, our connections deepen, and our school grows stronger.

A Mentorship Network

With that in mind, I don’t believe I have just one mentor—I have many. Across divisions, roles, subject areas, and experience levels, I continue to learn from the incredible educators and professionals who make up BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Chengdu.
