This summer, we wish for children to feel warmth through family time, joy through play with peers, and growth through exploring the world. At the same time, summer is also a high-risk period for incidents such as drowning, fire, and traffic accidents. To help ensure a safe and peaceful holiday for every child, BASIS Bilingual Kindergarten Nanshan has specially prepared the 2025 Summer Safety Guide for your attention.
Safety First
Water Safety
- No Unauthorized Swimming:
Children must not swim in reservoirs, rivers, lakes, ponds, or any other bodies of water without proper safety facilities. Swimming alone or without adult supervision is strictly prohibited. - The “Four Knows” for Parents:
Know children’s whereabouts, activities, companions, and expected return time. Always stay informed of their movements. - Important reminder:
Swimming in pools must be supervised by an adult at all times. Children should wear proper flotation devices, and never be left out of sight.
Fire Safety
- Check your surroundings: Keep dangerous items such as lighters, matches, and alcohol-based products out of children’s reach. Regularly check electrical wiring at home, and turn off power and gas when leaving the house.
- Teach children basic fire escape skills: Stay low and cover mouth and nose, use a wet towel to escape smoke, never use elevators during a fire, and ensure they are familiar with the home’s emergency exits.
- No open flames or smoking in scenic areas. When staying in hotels, check for fire safety hazards and make sure children are aware of emergency evacuation maps.
Traffic Safety
- Street Crossing: Teach children to stop, look, and listen before crossing the street. No running or playing near crosswalks. Always wear seatbelts in cars, and young children should use a child safety seat.
- Driving Safety: When driving, parents should maintain a safe and steady speed. Never allow children to lean out of windows. Electric scooters should be equipped with safety guards, and both adults and children must wear helmets.
- Bike Safety: Children should not ride bicycles or balance bikes on the road. Activities like skateboarding or rollerblading must be done in safe areas with proper protective gear.
Healthy Living Tips
Preventing Heatstroke and Illness
- Avoid going out during peak heat hours (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). When outdoors, wear a sun hat, light-colored clothing, and carry a water bottle to stay hydrated.
· Maintain a light and balanced diet. Eat more fruits and vegetables, and enjoy traditional cooling drinks like sour plum soup or mung bean soup in moderation. Limit cold drinks. - Wash hands frequently, avoid raw or cold foods, and ensure tableware is properly sanitized to prevent stomach illnesses.
- Keep indoor air conditioning above 26°C (78°F) and avoid direct airflow.
- Use mosquito repellent and other precautions to prevent diseases such as dengue fever and hand-foot-mouth disease.
Building Healthy Routines and Habits
-
- Keep a regular schedule:
Go to bed early and wake up early. Avoid staying up late, and make time for at least one hour of outdoor activity each day to get natural sunlight. - Protect children’s eyes:
Limit screen time to under 20 minutes per session. Encourage activities like picture book reading and hands-on play instead.
- Keep a regular schedule:
Growing Together
Physical Activity
- · Parent-child exercise:
Enjoy daily activities like morning jogging, playing soccer, jumping rope, or playing frisbee to build physical strength. Encourage children to try new sports such as swimming or climbing. - Outdoor exploration:
Take children to observe leaves in the park, go on nature scavenger hunts in the woods, or stargaze at night to spark curiosity and observation skills.
Hands-on Life Skills
- Little helpers at home:
Involve children in simple chores such as trimming vegetables for cooking, setting the table, sweeping, or organizing toys. These tasks help foster responsibility and independence. - Planting experience:
Try growing flowers or vegetables on the balcony. Keep a plant growth journal to experience the joy of nurturing life.
Reading
- Shared reading time:
Set aside a daily time for reading picture books together. Guide children to retell stories or imagine what happens next. - Creative expression:
Bring stories to life through drawing, clay modeling, or home theater performances to enhance both language skills and creativity.
Conclusion
We hope this guide helps every family make the most of summer—staying safe, building healthy habits, and creating lasting memories. May this season be one of laughter, learning, and meaningful connection for you and your child.
