When I look back on my first few months at BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Chengdu, it’s hard to believe how quickly everything has moved. Moving to a new country, starting at a new school, and learning how to navigate life in Chengdu all at once has been a big change—but a surprisingly smooth and rewarding one.
Building Foundations at Summer Institute
My introduction to BASIS International & Bilingual Schools began at the Summer Institute in Shenzhen. Walking into a room full of new teachers from around the world was a little daunting at first, but the sessions quickly helped us settle in. We learned about the BASIS International & Bilingual Schools approach, the Teaching & Learning Domains, and what makes the network unique. What helped most, though, were the conversations between sessions—sharing stories, comparing notes, and realizing we were all on the same learning curve. I left feeling prepared and supported, which made the transition to Chengdu much easier.

Bringing Science to Life
Back at school, I had the opportunity early on to run a science lesson during our Admissions Open Day. There’s something energizing about watching prospective students dive into hands-on activities, ask thoughtful questions, and genuinely enjoy experimenting. It was a great reminder of why I love teaching science—and a nice confidence booster during the early days of settling in.

Coaching and Community
Coaching the U15 girls’ basketball team has also been a standout experience. We competed in the BIBS • CAL season, which was both exciting and incredibly rewarding. The girls showed real determination and teamwork, and I found myself just as invested in each game as they were. Coaching has helped me build strong connections with students and feel even more involved in the school community.

Supporting Admissions and Meeting Families
I’ve also been involved with the Admissions team, interviewing prospective students and meeting families. It’s given me a new perspective on our school and the types of learners who are eager to join BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Chengdu. It’s been rewarding to contribute to that process, even in a small way.
Exploring Chengdu and China
Outside of school, I’ve been making an effort to explore my new home. Trips to Leshan and Xi’an have been unforgettable—standing before the Giant Buddha and later exploring the ancient city walls and Terracotta Army were moments I’ll never forget. And of course, I have to mention the food. Chengdu’s food scene is incredible. Whether it’s hotpot, noodles, or dishes I can’t yet pronounce confidently, the food has quickly become one of the highlights of living here. Sharing meals with colleagues has also been a great way to make new friendships and feel settled.

Feeling at Home in Chengdu
Looking back, I’m surprised by how much has happened in such a short time. Being involved in teaching, coaching, admissions, and exploring the city has helped me feel at home more quickly than I expected. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had so far, and I’m excited for everything still to come—even if I’m still working on building my spice tolerance.
