Marina Jenkins
Primary School Visual Arts and High School Ceramics Teacher
BASIS International School Shenzhen
As I embarked on my international teaching journey, I had no idea my family and I would end up in China. I had never visited or considered living in China. I received four job offers, two of which were in China. China, and more specifically, BASIS International Schools, became our first choice. I like to say that China chose us, and I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity.
Teaching at BASIS International School Shenzhen is a welcome surprise and gift. For one, China deeply values education and educators, which makes all the difference. I feel a sense of dignity and respect for my role here. As an educator in China, I am treated well and appreciated for my expertise in my specialized field. Our students and their families trust us to prepare their children for the future. Teaching in China is a refreshing and rejuvenating experience. I have a renewed sense of purpose and look forward to going to work each day. I am so thankful to be part of the BASIS International School Shenzhen family.

Teaching in China has been an extraordinary experience, but this past semester has deepened my appreciation for the strength, kindness, and cultural richness of this country in ways I could never have imagined. When our 14-month-old son faced a life-threatening medical emergency, my school, BASIS Bilingual School Guangming Shenzhen, and the local community wrapped their arms around us with unconditional love, care, and support.
For ten tearful days, we lived with our son, Teo, at the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University, where we became part of the Pediatric Ward, and Teo became one of their own. One morning, Teo ran a high fever, began having seizures, and stopped breathing. We entrusted his life to the hands of strangers, who transformed into true lifesavers. They will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
Every day, the school’s HR team and our Head of School, Dr. Mark DiFabio, stood by our side, helping us communicate with doctors, bringing gifts that made Teo smile—like the school mascot stuffed elephant—and offering nourishment for our minds, bodies, and souls. Their reassurance, “We are a team, we are a family,” carried a weight I will never forget.
China’s ancient culture and values—its resilience, compassion, and deep sense of community—were reflected in every act of kindness we received. This experience reaffirmed why my family and I are so grateful to live and work here, surrounded by colleagues and a culture that truly embodies humanity at its best.

Mathematics Teacher

What I appreciate most about teaching in China is working with such capable and motivated students. Their general ability to comprehend mathematics is remarkable. While it remains a challenge to ensure that every student reaches their full potential in every lesson, their responsiveness and appreciation when I go the extra mile make it incredibly rewarding. I also value the cultural and community experiences within the school, particularly events like Spirit Week. It was wonderful to see the students in a different light, showcasing their creativity and enthusiasm, which deepened my connection with them and reinforced my gratitude for being part of their educational journey.

I appreciate the personal and mental growth teaching in China has provided me over the years. Every day is a unique adventure that allows me to step outside my comfort zone and become a better person. The importance of family in the Chinese culture has greatly impacted me personally. I found my lifelong partner in China, and learning the Chinese values of family has made me so much more thankful every morning, surrounded by the ones who love and support you.
