At BASIS International Schools, we are growing rapidly and opening new schools in new locations every year. With new schools, comes new teachers and school leaders. We want our new teachers and administrators to be prepared and equipped for success before the school year begins. Each summer, we host a week-long training: the BASIS Summer Institute.
During the Summer Institute, new teachers and administrators have the opportunity to not only connect with their new colleagues at their own school, but with other teachers in their subject across the BASIS International Schools network. Experienced BASIS teachers from across our global network, known as Subject Area Advisers, lead subject specific training to guide new teachers in learning the BASIS Curriculum, share ideas, tips, and best practices, and establish mentoring relationships.
What did our attendees say about their experience this year?
“I recently had the opportunity to attend the BASIS Summer Institute hosted at BASIS International School Park Lane Harbour. I was thoroughly impressed from beginning to end! The level of professionalism left me in awe and wanting more. Kudos to the Operation Staff and Team Nanjing for making the traveling experience seamless!
The following three words describes my overall experience while attending the institute; ease, engaging, and exceptional. As a new member of BASIS International Schools, I anticipated a week full of sessions with overwhelming acronyms and procedures that I wouldn’t be able to grasp quickly. Yet, I can honestly say that I left every session at ease because I had an opportunity to ask questions for understanding, meet with my peers to gather resources, and deliberate with my team. The week was also packed with engaging sessions such as the roundtable discussions. They were most helpful to me as it consisted of shared best practices among those with experience at the various BASIS International Schools. By learning from one another, we become better educators and leaders.
I would like to thank BASIS International Schools, BASIS Global, and BASIS International School Nanjing for creating an opportunity to network. The Summer Institute was exceptional. I look forward to next summer!”
– Quinnesian Joyner, Dean of Students
“From the first day of the BASIS Summer Institute, my trainer provided us with hands-on activities that guided us to understand the curriculum and expectations of teachers. I learned about effective guided reading programs and techniques that would progress my students’ abilities at a pace that isn’t overwhelming, but still challenges them to be at levels above their actual grade. There was a wealth of teacher resources, including online materials, activities, and classroom management ideas, provided to bolster the learning outcomes of students and growth of teachers. I really enjoyed the step-by-step procedure for navigating the internal technology systems, as it was a tremendous help during onsite training at my campus in Hangzhou.
Overall, the BASIS Summer Institute was a great precursor to the lives of both teacher and student at BASIS International Schools. There were candid discussions about the high expectations of everyone in the classroom, and the stress that might bring, but the trainers and administration made it clear that there are people in place to prevent both students and teachers from failing.”
