As we celebrate World Tourism Day on September 27, we’re highlighting some of the incredible journeys our teachers took this past summer and during the recent Mid-Autumn Festival.  For BASIS International & Bilingual Schools teachers, these school breaks are more than just a time to unwind—they are perfect opportunities to explore new cultures and places. Check out our teachers’ amazing adventures, from exploring neighboring Hong Kong and the northeastern border of China and Russia to trips further afield to Thailand, Europe, and Africa.

Discovering Hong Kong’s Hidden Gems

Teacher Travels in Hong Kong

During the Mid-Autumn Festival, I took a delightful ferry ride from Shenzhen to Hong Kong, just an hour away. After nine years in China, I finally boarded a traditional junk boat at Tsim Sha Tsui, sailing through Victoria Harbour under vibrant red sails. The next day, we rode the cable car to Lamma Island and visited the majestic Tian Tan Buddha, a symbol of peace and enlightenment in the Buddhist community. Surrounded by stunning ocean views and lush greenery, I felt rejuvenated. This experience reflects BASIS International Schools’ unique lifestyle, inspiring us to explore and appreciate our vibrant surroundings.

An Epic Five-Country Adventure

Teacher travels, expat teaching couple

This summer we embarked on an adventure across Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. Starting in Europe, we explored the vibrant cities of Portugal and Spain and admired the ancient architecture. After a quick family visit in South Africa, our journey continued in Zimbabwe where we were awed by Victoria Falls. Finally, we ended our trip in the paradise of Zanzibar, Tanzania. Each stop offered something unique and together made for an unforgettable summer vacation.

A Journey to the Northeastern Border of China and Russia

Teacher Travels - high speed train

This holiday season was planned to achieve two long-awaited bucket-list events. One, travel on the longest high-speed railway line (over 2500km) from Shanghai to Harbin, a trip that takes more than 12 hours to complete. The train travels through the “breadbasket” of China where the second most corn production by area is produced in the world. In Harbin, I visited the Space Museum.

The second bucket-list event was to travel by bus through the most northeastern Manchuria border into far-east Russia and visit the famous city of Vladivostok. The city is known for its seafood, Russian sausages, and the historic Naval Base.

Discovering Thailand’s Vibrant Culture and Natural Beauty

Snorkeling in Thailand

Snorkeling in Thailand

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to explore Thailand, a beautiful country just a short flight away from China. With its stunning beaches, vibrant street markets, and mouthwatering cuisine, Thailand proved to be an unforgettable destination. From lounging by the crystal-clear waters to discovering historic temples, every moment was filled with adventure and discovery.

Teachers gathered around a meal in Wuhan

Back in Wuhan, I celebrated Mexican Independence Day on September 16th with friends from Mexico and individuals from around the globe. This international gathering highlighted the diverse and thriving community we have here in China. Living and working in Wuhan offers the unique chance to connect with people from various cultures, making celebrations like this especially meaningful.

Each adventure has deepened my connections to the places I visit and the diverse individuals I meet along the way. I look forward to more opportunities to explore, celebrate, and connect in the future, embracing the incredible journey that life offers here in China and beyond.

I had the opportunity to spend a month in Thailand this summer, exploring its diverse landscapes and rich culture. From the picturesque beaches of Krabi and Phi Phi Islands to the urban vibrancy of Bangkok, each destination offered unique insights into the local way of life. This experience not only broadened my perspective but also highlighted the importance of cultural immersion in our globalized world. Have you had any transformative travel experiences?
