It’s the end of May, then the middle of June, and there’s one thing on every student and teacher’s mind: summer break! The 2019-20 school year was like none before it, and after the trials of a pandemic, subsequent quarantines, distance learning, restarting school with new protocols and procedures, and creating new ways to continue providing an outstanding education to our students, it is definitely safe to say our teachers deserved a lovely summer vacation.

Due to current travel restrictions, most of our expat teachers in China were unable to return to their home countries for the summer vacation, as many usually do. However, this did not stop them from making the most of the time to travel within China and experience the natural beauty, tourist attractions, and educational opportunities available.

Over the summer we shared many pictures from our teachers’ travels on our Instagram account (@basisinternationalschools), ranging from yaks in Yunnan, to surfing in Hainan province. We also saw the results of innovative summer learning programs that some of our teachers stayed in school to offer our students.

So…how did our teachers spend their summer vacation? Let’s take a look!

Fun Activities

Summer Programs at BASIS International School Hangzhou and BASIS International School Shenzhen

Our teachers are always coming up with innovative lessons and ways to share their excitement and passion for their subject with their students. This often takes the form of lessons that combine different subjects, fun projects, and creative thinking. At BASIS International School Shenzhen, teachers and over 400 students from both BASIS International Schools Shenzhen and Park Lane Harbour came together for a variety of classes, ranging from AP prep, to arts, to coding, to video editing.

BASIS International School Hangzhou also offered a summer program for students. From creating sound effects to accompany a radio horror show script, to band class, to learning about how STEM and art collide with a study of plants, space, and NASA’s Hubble telescope, our teachers created amazing cross-curricular lessons that students will remember long after the summer is over.
