Laura Avendano is a dedicated educator with a passion for both teaching and cultural experiences. Originally from California, U.S.A., she began her journey abroad 16 years ago in Spain, where she quickly fell in love with the experience. After spending many years teaching and starting a family there, it seemed like the perfect timing for a new adventure – teaching in Asia. Now, as a teacher at BASIS International School Bangkok, she shares her journey of teaching and living in Thailand.
Life in Thailand and Bangkok
Life in Thailand, particularly in Bangkok, is a unique blend of modernity and tradition, offering an experience that’s quite different from the USA or Europe. The city has its own charm, with vibrant street markets, massive shopping malls, and an endless variety of activities to enjoy. Living on the outskirts of Bangkok means we often head into the city on weekends to explore the bustling heart of it all. There’s always something happening, from cultural events to nightlife, making it a place that has something for everyone—whether you’re single, married, with a family, or at any age.
Thailand is also home to some truly breath-taking destinations, with stunning national parks and exotic islands that offer a peaceful escape from the city. These natural wonders are perfect for weekend trips and allow us to appreciate the country’s incredible beauty. Overall, while life in Thailand is very different from what I knew in the USA and Europe, it’s a place that continuously surprises and delights, offering new experiences for us to enjoy together as a family.
Cost of Living and Lifestyle in Bangkok
The cost of living in Bangkok is quite affordable, especially when compared to cities in the USA or Europe. For our first year, we chose to live in the housing provided by the school, which is conveniently located close to the school, making it easier for my family to adjust to a new country. The housing is in a great spot, with a morning and afternoon market right across the street, which makes everyday living very convenient. There’s also a large mall with grocery stores within walking distance, so shopping is hassle-free.
Getting to the center of Bangkok is simple—taxis are affordable, though you should be prepared for the infamous Bangkok traffic. Despite the congestion, the cost of transportation remains reasonable. With a family of three, we find that we can comfortably live on one salary. We enjoy traveling and exploring, but during the week, we prefer cooking at home. On weekends, we love venturing out to enjoy the variety of local restaurants and markets Bangkok has to offer. The lifestyle here allows us to strike a balance between home-cooked meals and experiencing the rich food culture.
