In 2023, BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Wuhan welcomed its first cohort of students, embarking on a journey themed around “growth.” As we close this school year, we reflect on the countless precious memories we have woven together.
As Head of School Mr. Dan Schneider often says, “We are a data-oriented school.” Our teachers track students’ progress, crafting a unique “portrait of growth” for each student through data. However, for the students and teachers who have experienced this school year together, these numbers represent not just statistics, but countless touching stories. As the school year has came to a close, let us look back together and explore BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Wuhan’s “A Year in Numbers,” reliving the highlights and moments of this past year.
A Year in Numbers
180 Days Together
Faculty and students spent 50% of the year together, from 5:30 A.M. bus departures to 10:30 P.M. boarding teachers reminding students to go to bed. From the early morning “Good morning” to the “See you tomorrow,” we have accompanied each other, braving all weather throughout the entire year. Every day and night has been filled with warmth and companionship.
Academic Achievements
After a year of learning, Upper School students completed their comprehensive exams, covering eight subjects with a total of 710 exams taken. Over the course of the year, our teachers provided nearly 3,100 hours of student support. Based on MAP results, from the beginning to end of the school year, students’ growth rate in English reading and English language surpassed 74% of their peers.
Every instance of growth and progress deserves celebration and recognition. During the four quarters this year, over 900 academic awards were distributed. We firmly believe that every effort will yield its due reward. We wish every student the Gator spirit and may they achieve even greater heights in the new school year.
Professional Development
Students and teachers together form the soul of the school, infusing the campus with continuous vitality and creativity. While students are rapidly growing, teachers are also constantly practicing the concept of lifelong learning.
Since the beginning of the school year, we have conducted 14 days of in-school professional development (PD) and 60 minutes of weekly routine PD activities. There have been 1,086 formal and random observations recorded, with each teacher being observed an average of 24 times. In addition, the academic leadership team visited other campuses for seven training and professional development sessions with the network, totaling 14 days of cross-campus exchange. Through training and peer evaluations, teachers learn from each other, constantly refining their skills and striving for excellence in education.
House System
On November 17th, 2023, we established four houses. “Setting sail across the starry sea,” teachers and parents witnessed each little star that traveled from afar, gathering in their respective shining house, bursting forth with even more dazzling and warm radiance. This year, the four houses collectively accumulated 463 House points. These valuable scores are all marks of students’ unremitting efforts and outstanding performances.
Kindergarten Graduation
Time flies. On June 17, 2024, 16 little graduates from the kindergarten also joined their “New House.” They will embark from here, setting sail towards a new chapter in their school life.
Cultural Celebrations
This year, students celebrated four festivals at school. Teachers used these festivals as a platform to weave rich cultural content and unique folk customs, allowing students to experience the festive atmosphere while savoring the cultural depth:
- September: Mid-Autumn Festival
- December: Winter Festival
- February: Chinese New Year
- June: Dragon Boat Festival
Arts and Athletics
Library Milestones
“Read ten thousand books, travel ten thousand miles.” On October 18, 2023, our “heart of the campus” library opened its doors to students and teachers. The three-story library, with tens of thousands of books in its collection, stays open an additional hour after school from Monday to Thursday and two extra hours every Saturday morning. This allows students to temporarily slow down, pause, and engage in reading and reflection. Through books, children gain an understanding of the world around them. In the past year, the library recorded a total of 11,394 borrowings.
