When my family and I made the big decision to move to China and join BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Wuhan, we expected plenty of challenges and uncertainties along the way. In reality, the support we received from the school’s HR team far exceeded our expectations, making the transition much smoother than we ever imagined. Summer Institute: A Powerful Start
A key highlight in my onboarding experience was the Summer Institute held in Shenzhen. It served as both an introduction to the BASIS International & Bilingual Schools philosophy and a deep dive into what sets BASIS International & Bilingual Schools apart. The event was thoughtfully designed to familiarize new faculty with everything from curriculum standards to the broader vision of the organization as an ambitious educational institution. More than just information, it was a great opportunity to meet fellow educators, each knowledgeable about their work and excited to be part of something unique.
Building Connections From Day One
Once the academic year began, the school organized events that helped new staff and families to connect and start building friendships straight away. For us, these early gatherings were invaluable. Not only did it help us get to know colleagues, but it made a big difference for my son, who quickly found new friends and began to feel at home within the school community.
Joining a Collaborative Math & Science Team
Joining the primary math and science team has been a truly rewarding part of my BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Wuhan experience. From lesson planning to activity design, my colleagues have welcomed me with warmth and professionalism, consistently sharing their expertise and ideas. The collaborative spirit has made it easy to find my footing, and I truly appreciate how everyone supports one another—both professionally and personally.

Fast Professional Growth in a Supportive Environment
One aspect that stands out to me is how quickly I’ve experienced professional growth, even in these first few months. Adapting to a new curriculum and educational setting has challenged me to rethink and refine my approach to lesson planning, pacing, and instruction. The collaborative culture among colleagues, combined with the school’s emphasis on evidence-based practice and regular observations and feedback, has pushed me to continuously improve my teaching and reflect on what works best for my students. I’m grateful for the opportunities to learn and grow here, and I feel confident that my professional skills are developing more rapidly than I had anticipated.
Life in Wuhan: A Welcoming New Home
Outside of school, my family and I are really enjoying our new home in Wuhan. The city offers an abundance of options for family entertainment, from vibrant shopping malls and beautiful parks to countless dining choices. Local restaurants and delivery services make daily life extremely convenient, and now that the summer heat has faded, we’re enjoying some wonderful weather—even as we prepare for a cold winter ahead! China feels remarkably safe, and every interaction we’ve had with local residents has been friendly and helpful.
Overall, settling into BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Wuhan has been an overwhelmingly positive experience for our family. We feel welcomed by both the school community and the city itself, and we’re genuinely happy with our decision to come here. I look forward with excitement to the rest of the year and beyond as part of this community.
