My Journey with BASIS
I began my journey at BASIS International School Park Lane Harbour in 2020 as a Physics Subject Expert Teacher (SET). From day one, I was captivated by the robust curriculum and high standards of teaching, which immediately challenged me to grow as an educator. In my second year, I was approached to take on the role of Grade 6 and Grade 8 Course Advisor (CAD). I accepted this exciting opportunity, as it allowed me to delve deeper into implementing the BASIS Curriculum and provide leadership prospects in a school setting. It marked my first step toward professional growth.
By 2022, I was honored to be appointed Physics Chair at my school and Grade 8 Physics CAD for BASIS International & Bilingual Schools • China. My leadership role further expanded in 2023 when I moved from Physics Chair to Science Chair, continuing my role as Grade 8 Physics CAD for the network. This year, I am excited to embark on my third year as Science Chair, my third year as Grade 8 Physics CAD, and my first year as the Senior Physics Chair for middle and high school.
Motivation for Leadership
The desire to contribute to the broader educational landscape and shape the next generation of leaders motivated me to step into a management and leadership role. I’ve always found joy in teaching, but as I took on more responsibilities, I realized the importance of guiding other teachers and departments toward excellence. Leadership in education is about fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. By stepping up, I was able to influence not only the students but also my colleagues, ensuring that we continuously strive for better practices and outcomes.
Leadership Training and Support
BASIS provides a structured and comprehensive support system for leaders. Upon transitioning to my initial management role, I participated in the Institute of Management & Teaching (IMAT) chairs training tailored to equip new chairs with the necessary tools for success. The workshops offered valuable insights into effective team management and running a successful professional development for teachers. This training was instrumental in facilitating my smooth transition into a leadership position.
Additionally, BASIS organizes an annual Summer Institute at the beginning of each year, offering specific training to all CADs, chairs, and new teachers. Throughout the school year, there are network collaboration meetings to support the faculty. During these sessions, faculty members collaborate within their respective divisions or across all school levels or subjects within the network. Department chairs and CADs also meet for round table discussions, organized by the network, to work on different curriculum projects.
A Commitment to Professional Development
BASIS International & Bilingual Schools is deeply invested in continued professional development for its teachers and managers. Throughout my time in leadership, I have experienced firsthand how BASIS International & Bilingual Schools encourages growth through various professional development workshops, collaboration with colleagues across campuses, and opportunities to take on new responsibilities. Whether through curriculum alignment meetings or leadership retreats, the network offers continuous learning that keeps educators sharp and engaged.
As a CAD, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with peers in different regions and learn from their experiences, broadening my understanding and strengthening my leadership skills. The school organizes professional learning days twice a year, during which all faculty members participate in various professional development sessions and activities throughout the day.
A Collaborative and Ambitious Environment
The BASIS International & Bilingual Schools culture is one of high standards, innovation, and support. Teachers and administrators alike are encouraged to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the classroom. This culture has had a significant impact on my own professional development, as it fosters an environment of continuous learning and growth. Colleagues are willing to collaborate and share ideas, and there’s a strong sense of community, both within the school and across the network. This collective mindset pushes everyone to do their best, and it’s this collaborative and ambitious culture that has made my journey at BASIS International School Park Lane Harbour so rewarding.
Growing Through Mentorship
I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with many inspiring colleagues and the exceptional admin team at BASIS International School Park Lane Harbour. Head of School John Quirk was crucial in my professional growth. His unwavering guidance and mentorship played a pivotal role in my transformation into a capable leader. John adeptly steered me through the intricacies of assuming a leadership role, deftly navigating the complexities of team management while upholding the highest teaching standards. His unwavering support not only bolstered my confidence but also profoundly continues to influence my leadership approach to this day.
Advice for Teachers
My advice for teachers looking to advance within the BASIS International & Bilingual Schools • China network is simple: be proactive and open to new challenges. Growth opportunities often come when you step outside your comfort zone, whether taking on a new subject, accepting a leadership role, or participating in professional development workshops. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek guidance from those with more experience. BASIS China provides a wealth of resources and mentorship opportunities, so take full advantage of them—your growth is only limited by your willingness to pursue it.
