My name is Esthé van Aswegen, and I currently serve as the Early Childhood Education Vice Head of Division (VHOD) at BASIS International School Shenzhen. In this role, I work closely with both teachers and administrators to support curriculum development, professional growth, and the social–emotional well-being of our youngest learners at our flagship school. Living and teaching in China has been an enriching experience that has deepened my appreciation for international education, collaboration, and the continuous advice that drinking hot water fixes most ailments.

I began my journey at BASIS International School Shenzhen in 2020 as a PreK2 teacher and then Kindergarten teacher, where I focused on creating the perfect balance between rigour and play — because learning should be joyful and meaningful. Over time, I found myself naturally mentoring teachers, developing classroom management strategies, and leading curriculum initiatives. In 2023, I took my first official step into leadership as the Chair of ECE, supporting a student body of over 240 students and a team of about 35 teachers. These experiences evolved into my current role as Vice Head of Division (VHOD), where I now focus on coaching teachers, contributing to school-wide decision-making, and still getting my daily fix of classroom giggles and glitter (lots of glitter).

At BASIS International Schools, collaboration is at the heart of leadership. Vice Heads of Division, Heads of Division, and other school leaders across the network meet regularly to align practices, share strategies, and problem-solve together. There’s a sense of community and mutual respect — we genuinely rely on one another to refine programs and ensure consistency across the BASIS International & Bilingual schools. Although I no longer have my own homeroom, I have the joy of being in every classroom, working alongside teachers and their students, and building strong, trusting relationships that make our division feel like one big family.

One thing I love most about BASIS International & Bilingual Schools is that continuous learning is part of our DNA. Leaders are encouraged to observe classrooms frequently, engage in peer coaching, and share best practices. I’ve always been given the freedom to research, experiment, and share new ideas — first within my own classroom, then across the division, and now across the network. Teachers grow when they are given space — and that’s exactly what BASIS International Schools provides: the space to try, to reflect, and to grow into the best version of yourself as an educator and leader.

My advice to teachers interested in leadership is simple: start small and start now. Lead from your classroom. Take initiative. Seek feedback. Reflect deeply. Support your peers. Leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about action and mindset. When I stepped into my first teaching role 16 years ago, I never imagined this incredible journey. You might not feel ready for it — but trust me, it’s already planned and ready for you!
