Moving halfway around the world to begin a new role is never just a professional decision; it’s a logistical, emotional, and personal leap. In this reflection, a veteran teacher shares what it was like to join BASIS International School Nanjing, and how thoughtful support systems, responsive leadership, and a close-knit faculty community shaped her experience from day one.

Pre-arrival Support
My transition was greatly facilitated by a strong support network. Emma from HR expertly managed the logistics, providing clear, timely guidance on all necessary steps. Simultaneously, my department head, Nicole Sittie, offered invaluable mentorship through regular check-ins and by securing key resources—most helpfully, an introduction to a current teacher at BASIS International School Nanjing. I also benefited from online transition meetings with my Chair. This comprehensive support from multiple stakeholders ensured every detail of the move was covered smoothly and efficiently.
Seamless Onboarding
The initial weeks before students arrived could have been overwhelming, but the team at BASIS International School Nanjing once again ensured a smooth transition. I was greeted at the airport by colleagues who helped me settle into my new apartment, where a welcome kit of groceries immediately eased one practical burden. Emma continued her support in person, guiding me through essential setups like local banking and phone service.

After navigating my first week in Nanjing, I attended the Summer Institute in Shenzhen. There, meeting my Chair in person felt seamless due to our prior communication, allowing us to dive right into collaborative work. Connecting with other BASIS International & Bilingual Schools educators from across China also reinforced a strong sense of community and shared purpose from the very start.

Close-Knit Faculty Community
With 18 years of teaching experience, this international move represents a significant and rewarding new chapter in my career. While being away from family presents its challenges, I’ve found tremendous support in a close-knit group of colleagues who actively ensure I feel at home and assist me whenever needed.

Throughout this transition, unexpected obstacles have arisen, yet in every instance—particularly from the administration—I have received immediate, thoughtful support to navigate difficulties. This has fostered a profound sense of community, essentially creating a second family on the other side of the world.
Delightful Local Discoveries
One delightful discovery has been the thriving coffee culture in China, which pleasantly surprised me as an avid coffee drinker. I’ve fully embraced this, even spending a weekend with a colleague exploring a local coffee fair and sampling diverse styles and flavors. While navigating the language barrier has been the most significant challenge, I am continually supported by helpful colleagues and the indispensable aid of translation apps. This reliance has made my phone an essential tool for daily life—an attachment I never anticipated, but one that now feels vital for communication and connection.

My work-related travel has unexpectedly fueled a passion for exploration. Experiencing diverse regional foods and visiting new cities has ignited a desire for continuous adventure beyond my professional responsibilities. I eagerly anticipate the coming years, planning to travel deeper into China to further immerse myself in its rich culinary and cultural landscape.
First Chinese New Year
Transitioning to a new country has also meant embracing new holidays, most notably Chinese New Year. My husband was able to visit, and together we explored Nanjing before traveling to Hong Kong for the celebration itself. While in Hong Kong, we visited the Wishing Tree to make our wish and spent time walking around, taking in the festivities marking the Year of the Horse. That entire experience deepened our shared desire to continue uncovering the beauty of China. From hiking through Purple Mountain to riding the Victoria Peak Tram for sweeping views of Hong Kong, visiting the iconic Big Buddha, and even enjoying Hong Kong Disneyland, we filled our time with both adventure and discovery.

Rewarding Aspects of BASIS International Schools

My humanities team exemplifies collaboration and dedication. Comprised of exceptionally hardworking individuals, we consistently push each other’s practice forward by exchanging ideas, refining instructional techniques, and innovating on content—all within a supportive and genuinely enjoyable dynamic. The most rewarding aspect is the shared, deep-seated commitment to providing the best possible education for our students, which makes coming to work each day both inspiring and purposeful.
