For Dr. Matthew Russo, returning to China felt like a natural next chapter. After first joining BASIS International School Nanjing, he and his family later found themselves missing the professional community, cultural experiences, and sense of discovery that shaped their time abroad there. In this blog, Dr. Russo shares what brought his family back to BASIS International & Bilingual Schools • China and how their new chapter in Chengdu has continued to enrich both their personal and professional lives.
A Founding Chapter in Nanjing
In the fall of 2019, I moved to China for the first time, an experience that would profoundly shape both my personal and professional life. I joined the founding faculty at BASIS International School Nanjing, an opportunity that was both exciting and deeply rewarding. Being part of a new school community allowed us to help establish the culture, traditions, and academic foundation that would guide the school for years to come. It was inspiring to work alongside such talented and experienced educators who shared a strong commitment to excellence and student growth.
Finding Professional Community Abroad
Coming from public schools in the United States, I was immediately struck by the collaborative and academically focused environment within the BASIS International & Bilingual Schools • China network. The emphasis on thoughtful planning, meaningful student relationships, and professional collaboration created an atmosphere where both teachers and students could thrive. It was energizing to be part of a community where education was so highly valued by students, families, and faculty alike.
Life Beyond the Classroom
Outside of school, living in China was equally transformative. During my time in Nanjing, I met my wife, and together we embraced every opportunity to explore the country. We were fortunate to experience the incredible diversity China has to offer, from the vibrant energy of Shanghai and the rich history of Beijing to the stunning landscapes of Lijiang and Guilin. Those experiences deepened our appreciation for international living and broadened our perspective in ways we could never have imagined.
Time Back in the United States
Eventually, we returned to the United States to begin the next chapter of our lives and grow our family. While it was wonderful to be closer to our family and friends, we quickly realized how much we missed our life abroad, both personally and professionally. We missed the sense of adventure that came with living in a different culture, the opportunity to travel and explore, and the daily experience of learning from the world around us. Just as importantly, we missed being part of the BASIS International & Bilingual Schools • China community.
A New Chapter in Chengdu
When the opportunity arose to return to the network four years later, the decision felt natural. BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Chengdu was immediately our first choice. Returning allowed us not only to reconnect with the values and community we appreciated so much, but also to experience a different region of China from our new home in Chengdu. In our new roles, we have continued to grow professionally while exploring more of western China and immersing ourselves once again in the culture, cuisine, and experiences that made our first years here so meaningful.
Raising a Family Abroad
Returning has become even more special now that our family has grown. Our children, now two and four years old, are sharing in this experience with us. Our oldest has already joined the ECE program, with our youngest set to begin next year. Watching them grow up in an international environment, develop a second language, and experience a culture different from their own has been incredibly rewarding.
Grateful to Be Back
We are deeply grateful to be back with BASIS International & Bilingual Schools • China and to once again be part of a community so dedicated to learning, growth, and global mindedness. Looking ahead, we are excited for all the opportunities and experiences still to come.
