BASIS International School Shenzhen closed out 2021 with a groundbreaking ceremony on their new campus! The ceremony took place on December 31, 2021 and marks the beginning of construction for the new campus of our flagship international school. This long awaited campus is expected to be completed in early 2023; the school will then move from the current Shekou campus to the new location.
The aim of this new campus is to create a state-of-the-art 21st century school that combines the highest construction standards with cutting-edge technology in a vibrant expatriate location.
BASIS International School Shenzhen opened in 2015, and was the first international campus for the BASIS Curriculum Schools. By utilizing best international practices in teaching and learning, and focusing on innovation and academic rigor, BASIS International School Shenzhen has developed into a mature and stable school community in just six years.
The first full graduating class, the Class of 2019, achieved outstanding results on their college admissions. The Class of 2020 built upon these outcomes with 68% receiving admission to Top 30 U.S. colleges and universities, and 93% receiving offers from Top 50 schools. The Class of 2021 earned even greater results, with an 83% acceptance rate to Top 30 schools, and 100% acceptance rate to Top 50 schools. Students received admission to leading universities in the U.S. including University of Chicago, Duke, Dartmouth, Cornell, and University of California-Berkley; as well as top universities around the world, including Imperial College London, University of Toronto, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and others.
The new BASIS International School Shenzhen campus will be constructed with the highest standards. The total construction area will cover 85,000 square meters, with a total financial investment of over 1 billion yuan. As the BASIS flagship campus in China, the new campus will accommodate over 1,600 students in grades Pre-K through 12, and will continue to maintain small class sizes of no more than 22 students per class.
According to the plan, the completed campus will be similar to a miniature city, with open, blended, and diverse spaces. Every space is designed with immersive learning in mind, and will further enhance our already excellent teaching and learning. The campus will dramatically increase and upgrade existing teaching resources and cultural and sports facilities, emphasize the teaching space as part of education, and build a balanced education system that combines academic rigor with both physical and mental health.
The campus design is based around three courtyards. Individualized courtyards are connected functionally in series, with multi-level horizontal and vertical spaces. Connecting the three courtyards, a spacious and bright atrium provides the central hub of the campus. A variety of indoor and outdoor public spaces allow education to take place throughout the campus. This extensive range of spaces will provide rich collaborative opportunities, developing students’ independent thinking skills and passion for inquiry.
Learning spaces are arranged to form a number of small teaching complexes, differentiated according to teaching phase. These include ordinary classrooms, open spaces, and communication spaces. This design echoes the needs of flexible teaching, creating an atmosphere of communication and exploration, and encouraging teachers and students to actively participate in interdisciplinary dialogue.
The new campus will provide students and teachers with well-equipped standard classrooms, science laboratories, STEAM labs, large library, theater, black box theater, and sports facilities which will include an indoor swimming pool, three gyms, and running track.
Last, but certainly not least, the school will build a planetarium, which will be open and accessible to all teachers and students for astronomy-related teaching and learning. It will be one of the few professional, comprehensive planetariums in Shenzhen, and even the whole country. It is our hope that students can look up at the vast starry sky from time to time, and while appreciating the beauty of the universe, they will be able to plant the seeds of freedom, imagination, inquisitiveness, and exploration.
The new BASIS International School Shenzhen campus will continue our tradition of academic excellence, and further enhance the teaching and learning opportunities for every member of the school community. We hope you will follow us on this journey as we move to our beautiful new home in 2023!
