Greetings! My name is Shauna Sterling, and I am an experienced educator and mentor with 27 years of service. In 2021, I made the bold decision to teach abroad, seeking a fresh start and a new perspective. I took the leap and couldn’t be happier with my choice.
My first three months on campus were great as I met new colleagues and leaders while learning the BASIS system. In the following month, I applied for the ELL Chair role at my school, marking the beginning of my steps towards middle management.
Partway through my first full year at BASIS International School Hangzhou, an incredible opportunity presented itself. The upper management team approached me about taking on a different leadership role, specifically as the Vice Head of Primary. It was a moment that made me reflect on its potential for personal and professional growth. After careful consideration, I took another leap of faith, accepting the challenge. Now, I can proudly say that I have successfully completed my second year as Vice Head of Primary. My journey has been filled with valuable experiences, and the trust that BASIS placed in me is truly priceless. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I have received along the way.
Motivation for Moving into a Leadership Role
I wanted to lead and support colleagues in achieving our shared goals of educating our students. My skills, experience, and passion for education and mentoring fellow teachers made me well-suited for this role. I wanted to be a part of this collaborative and inclusive learning community among staff, students, and parents, and learn and grow more as a professional. Most importantly, I felt comfortable with the leadership team I knew I’d be working with on a day-to-day basis.
A Network of Support and Development
As an educator, I am fortunate to have a wide range of opportunities for collaboration, growth, and support, including weekly administrative meetings with the Head of School and Head of Division, where we discuss important matters, exchange ideas, and align our strategies.
Additionally, I engage in monthly network meetings, where educators from different schools within our network come together to share experiences and collaborate on educational initiatives. These meetings are a valuable platform for learning from one another and expanding our perspectives.
I also have the privilege of attending leadership retreats and manager training sessions throughout the year, which enhance my managerial skills and keep me updated on the latest educational practices. And, of course, day-to-day mentoring from my colleagues plays a crucial role in my professional growth. Through this ongoing mentorship, we learn from one another, share insights, and provide guidance, fostering a culture of continuous learning. Collectively, these opportunities create a vibrant and supportive educational environment that allows us to constantly improve and deliver the best possible education to our students.
The BASIS Culture: Fostering Inclusivity and Professional Excellence
BASIS International School Hangzhou is built on a foundation of warmth, inclusivity, and collaboration, much like a close-knit family. It’s a place where everyone feels valued, heard, and supported. Our community is woven together by strong relationships between students, parents, and faculty, creating a sense of belonging and trust. This unique culture has not only fostered a nurturing environment for our students to grow and thrive but has also profoundly impacted my professional development.
By being part of this community, I’ve come to realize the significance of building and maintaining strong relationships with all stakeholders. My experience here has sharpened my mentoring and coaching skills, allowing me to connect with students and colleagues on a deeper level and empower them to reach their full potential. Our school culture truly embodies the essence of the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I am incredibly fortunate to be a part of this nurturing and supportive community. In fact, I often share this meaningful quote with parents during our meetings with teachers and families.
Mentorship in Action
Mr. Stacey, the Head of Primary, and Mrs. Gailis, the Head of School, have been instrumental in my growth and success here at BASIS. Thank you for recognizing my potential and allowing me to flourish professionally. The growth I have made, professionally and personally, is something I’ll take with me wherever I go and I’ll continue with the knowledge you’ve shared.
Advice for Aspiring BASIS Leaders
Get involved! Participate in an after-school activity, present or co-present a professional development session, look for opportunities to be a Course Advisor or a Chair within your department, and most importantly, communicate your interest in advancement to your division leaders as they coach you throughout your journey.
